Hawai’i’s Macadamia Nut Industry is Special

Macadamia nuts are synonymous with Hawai'i, a staple found in myriad local products. Across the islands, you'll encounter these nuts in various forms: unadorned or flavored, enrobed in chocolate, integrated into desserts like tarts, pies, and cookies, and even in savory dishes like encrusted fish and poke. Beyond culinary uses, macadamia nut oil is versatile, utilized both in cooking and as a skin-care product.

This variety of products is a testament to the passion and dreams of the people behind them. As dedicated growers, we have spent decades cultivating top-quality Hawai'i-grown macadamias. Our efforts not only fuel these dreams but also contribute to the growth and uniqueness of this special industry.

Our Industry is at Risk

Farming, especially in Hawai'i, is fraught with uncertainties due to factors like unpredictable weather and the islands' varied microclimates and rocky landscapes. As local growers, we've always embraced these challenges. However, an unforeseen threat has emerged: foreign nuts supplanting Hawai'i-grown macadamias in products labeled as Hawaiian.

The issue intensified in 2022 following the shutdown of Hawai'i's largest macadamia nut processing plant. Since then, millions of pounds of imported nuts have been used in products branded as Hawaiian, while an equal quantity of local nuts lay unused in our orchards. Unbeknownst to many consumers, they continue to pay premium prices for nuts that are imported cheaply.

To address this, the Macadamia Growers of Hawai'i was established. Our goal is to raise awareness and advocate for origin labeling. We believe that clear labeling empowers consumers to make informed choices between Hawai'i-grown macadamias and those sourced from other countries like South Africa, China, or Kenya. Transparent origin labeling is crucial in safeguarding the integrity and future of our local macadamia industry.
